Review C-Drama : Zhong Kui Catches Demon (钟馗捉妖记)

Zhong Kui is a figure of Chinese mythology. There are many version about Zhong Kui folktales that adapted into dramas as well movies. Zhong Kui Catches Demon (钟馗捉妖记) was starting to air on June and ended not long ago, starring William Yang Xu Wen, Yang Rong, Cheng Zi Ning, Li Zi Feng and Madina.

So the story is started when the ghost vanquisher, Zhong Kui cast to mortal world without any memory, desperate he tried to recover back his memory, along the way, he met many friends that unlikely normal one to have and also together they will fight the evil for the sake of goodness.

What I like about this drama?

First at all, of course the cast. Starring William Yang Xu Wen, Yang Rong and Madina. This drama has many casts which enough to please one’s eyes moreover most of them are quite skillful actors and actresses who acting just more than passable (at least for me ^-^)

The story plot.

To be honest, I’m not really care about the plot because I really don’t have any idea about Zhong Kui, this figure whether in folktales or Chinese tradition. But, to my surprised the story plot that offered by this version is bit ‘eccentric’ from my point of view.

Mu Tian Ran (William Yang) is half human-half devil but at same time he is also Zhong Kui reincarnation in Mortal world. Mu Tian Ran is growing up among human, demon and devil thus he doesn’t have any negative feeling regarding demon and devil even he is human (this is he thought before he founded out his true identity). Mu Tian Ran even has sister called as Shao Zi (Chen Zi Ning) the demon tree who has been living with him for many years.

But one day, the place where Mu Tian Ran and Sha Zi live is destroyed by Tian Lan Ge, one of the biggest sect that specialized in catching demons and devils after the protection layer broke. Since then, Mu Tian Ran and Shao Zi are starting their journey which taking both of them to meet Ling Xi (Yang Rong) and Yang Ren Zhi (Li Zhi Feng) Tian Lan Ge’s disciplines. They also be friend with Fang Ji Bai, a Demon Cat (Chen Mo) and also Shi’s brother-sister, the devil from noble family and Ying Su (Madina) Mo Zu Sheng Nv.

The first three episodes quite boring but, watching William Yang who played cheerful character, bit naughty and mischievous. I think it still bearable. To sum up, this drama may not everyone cup of tea but if you try to give it a chance, perhaps it will bring you another vibe as well watching experience.

PS: there is not many antagonist that able to catch my attention but Ding Zi Feng who played as the main antagonist, the leader of Tian Lan Ge is super annoying as well so irritating. Every time I saw him, really wanted to smash him LOLS. But, didn’t this mean his acting really good? After all he able to evoke the audience emotion =.=”
