Hello My Debate Partner is scored about 7.8 in douban which can consider high because it casts new face. This drama starring Pan You Cheng and Lin Xin Yi as the main leads. Focusing in Debate topic and also university romance, this drama is slightly different with your usual light-heart fluffy school romance drama.
Since Yi Xiao Xi (Lin Xin Yi) young she always feels that her parent not really caring about her compare to her genius younger sister, Yi Xiao Chen. One of the most disappointed moment when Xiao Xi accepted to university, her parent preferred to go to Singapore accompanying her younger sister who having competition to send her to university. Xiao Xi always feels that her younger sister as her parent pride while she is someone not worth to mention.
Yi Xiao Xi finally goes to university by herself and at there she meets Bai Yu (Pan You Cheng) who latter becomes her debate partner and also her love interest. Beside that, she also meets many good friends such as Xiao En, her roommate who most of time only let out en whenever she being asked, Sun Qing, her roommate who is foodie and super innocent girl, all her emotions is written on her face.
As I mentioned this isn’t really a kind of your typical idol romance drama which focusing in debate theme. There is no complexity in the story plot and yet it quite simple also meaningful. Yi Xiao Xi always thinks herself as someone who can’t be any ordinary than ordinary, she isn’t vocal person and tend to be a person who goes with the circumstance whether she dislikes or likes it.
Xiao Xi and Sun Qing, her roommates are joining the debate club with different purpose and motivation. Xiao Xi wants to try new experience and dig out her potential after she saw her senior sister, Ting Ting debate. While Sun Qing joining debate club because she attracted to Senior Brother Qing Bei, who is also the school grass. On the process joining the debate club, Xiao Xi meets Bai Yu, her enemy who likes to argue with her whenever they meet. At the end, Xiao Xi, Sun Qing, Qing Bei, Bai Yu and Yang Hua Xia gather as debate club member.
This drama has simple, deep and meaningful story plot. Simple because there is no complexity triangle or square love in which each characters are ended happily. Deep because the topic they have used when debating. You can learn new perspective along the way they debating. Meaningful because some debate topics are actually give you new insight and touched your heart if you listened well.
One of the best scene that I like in this drama is when Xiao Xi debates with dream as topic ‘沒有夢想的生活是/不是平庸的’ topic. Literally translated as Life without dream is ordinary / isn’t ordinary. But personally, I think 平庸 in here means unworthy or unusefulness or meaningless.
