Another review of Indonesian Novel. Sang Maharani is written by Agnes Jessica. Sang Maharani is one of history fiction novel about Indonesia when colonized by dutch.
To be honest, I don’t really like to read about Indonesia history during the colonial or the Independence time when Soekarno was the president who was one of Indonesia founder.
Just like the Chinese history, I prefer to read the dynasties such as Tang, Wei, Qian, etc.
Synopsis:
As the daughter of general in dutch colonization, Maharani has everything, beauty and brain, wealthy and respect. but when her father pass away and dutch was lose to Japanese, her life being turn over 360. her step mother makes her to be maid on her own house. she got nothing from her dad wealth.
the most painful was she being sent to the Japanese government as Jugun Lanfu, hostess to satisfied Japanese soldiers desire. her self-honor torn, her body wasn’t belong to her anymore. her life changed to be the most horrific nightmare. her feeling as human being was death because she didn’t feel as precious human anymore.
then…
she met with Arik, her adopt sibling who was separated for such long time. her adopt sibling was loved and in love with her. this was one of her happiness after her scary life.
finally she realized, love that she felt for Arik wasn’t same as the love that she felt when they were kids. alike stealing bread which taste so sweet, the forbidden love entangle and trap her. was she still brave to reach it?
My opinion
Sang Maharani is one of story which tell about the dark side effect being colonized and women as victim. no one really wrong in Sang Maharani but the situation and condition.
